Basic Info
Name:Rabastan Lestrange
Birthdate:05-27
Bio
The Basics

Character Name: Rabastan Phillipe Lestrange
PB: Neil Hannon

Age: 39
Birthday: 27th May, 1960
Wand: 10", laburnum, dragon heartstring
House in School: Slytherin
Bloodline: Pureblood

Political View: Rabastan is a madman. Worse - a madman with a political agenda. He was brought up in a staunchly pureblood family that did not view 'tainted blood' kindly. A rigid believer in the purity of blood, he is quick to condemn, or worse, harm, those who possess or support the cause of wizards with 'tainted' blood. He is reactionary and anti-establishment; for the time being, he is the closest thing to an anarchist. Seeing the decisions of the ministry as an affront to the very nature of wizardry, he wishes to bring down the Mudblood Authority and restore purity of blood as the most important criterion for becoming a wizard.

Rabastan, circa 1982, Rome

Appearance

Height: 6'2"
Weight: 143 lbs
Eyes: Hazel brown
Hair: Shaggy, dark brown hair that takes a large investment of time and effort to look effortlessly unkempt.
Build: Thin and rangy
Dress Style: Susceptible to cold, he is rarely seen without a large coat, a scarf and gloves. He is, however, a man of playboy-ish sensibilities and only wears the best: tailored suit, expensive trousers, silk shirts. Elegant and expensive.

Basic Physical Description: A handsome, aristocratic-looking man whose personal grooming and upkeep have slowly degenerated since his time in Azkaban. Rabastan is tall, broad shouldered but shockingly gaunt - wasted. His skin is pale, a sickly-grey colour; his face is drawn and lined with fatigue, disrupted by the occasional pockmark, wrinkle and the seemingly permanent stubble that no amount of persuasion can remove.

Defining Marks: Rabastan's body is littered with scars from his youth and time spent under the heavy hand of the Dark Lord. His most distinctive, however, is a paper-thin scar on the left of his chin that runs down almost to his Adam's apple.

Personality

Rabastan, on the surface, is your quintessential gentleman of leisure: cultured, charismatic, learned and leaning to the predatory side when it comes to sexual relationships. He has a taste for the finer things in life, and though seemingly frugal - miserly - he spends money just as fast as he accumulates it. In the same vein, he often appears slovenly, lazy; an idle man content to sleep, eat and vegetate. He possesses a teenage arrogance he seems never to have grown out of, an almost childish approach to cruelty, and is prone to being petulant and glib.

On a deeper level, however, Rabastan has a tenuous link with the world and those within it. If he wasn't unstable prior to his stay in Azkaban, he certainly was upon leaving it. No moral compass, emotionally fickle, with almost a schizophrenic grip on reality, he is the very epitome of his zodiac - Gemini, a sign of duality. He is miserable and desolate, then conversely cool, collected and sadistic, and again frivolous, boyish and charming. At times he retracts so wholly into his own psyche that it is nearly impossible to rouse him, as if disappearing into a catatonic state. At others he suffers from debilitating paranoia, an irrational, crippling fear of authority, of being watched constantly - at which point he may become violent. When stressed, he hears church bells and rubs his fingers on the bridge of his nose, as if massaging out a headache. He does not cope well with situations of extreme pressure and, as a result, turns to alcohol, sex and all sorts of other morally questionable activities and substances in an attempt to self-medicate.

That's not to say that he lacks clarity of vision or dedication in his line of work. On the contrary, if given a job, Rabastan will pursue it to the point of near obsessiveness. A perfectionist, it galls him that a badly-performed job might reflect on others' perceptions of his abilities. At heart he is self-conscious and competitive.

Psychology

Extrovert/Introvert: An introvert by nature, Rabastan dwells more often than is healthy in his own mind. However, if he deems it necessary, he will rise to the occasion with all his might: he has a way with words and a well-placed smile that puts a person at ease, even if he only does so for his own gains.
Boggart Would Be: For Rabastan, a Boggart will take the form of the nursemaid he had as a child. As a young boy, his family was frequently absent - his mother socialising, his father too busy, his brother at Hogwarts (at least for the latter part of his childhood) - and consequently countless hours were spent with his nanny, Ninah. A sickly child, he bore the brunt of over-protectiveness, of unpleasant medicines and smelly salves. Ninah was a humourless, no-nonsense woman and as a result Rabastan's approved childhood pastimes were restricted to playing the piano, reading books and quietly playing (indoors). Any infringement of her rules resulted in the liberal use of corporal punishment. His fear of the woman is symbolic not only of being helpless, powerless against someone, but of feeling abandoned by his family.
Patronus Would Be: Yes, he can produce a Patronus, but since his stay in Azkaban his ability to do so has dwindled, if not diminished completely. When produced, it takes the form of a Mastiff, a breed of dog used in the past in bloodsports such as bull-baiting. With an unhealthy appetite for cruelty and the macabre, Rabastan, in his late teens, set a Mastiff on a former classmate of his, "To see what would happen." His patronus is reflective of the enjoyment he receives in control, dominance, power and pain.

Sexuality

Heterosexual. Being brought up in a conservative (albeit magical) family drummed into him the 'impropriety' of homosexuality. As a result, in his heyday he was prone to flaunting his sexuality, being liberal with any female who threw herself at him, regardless of levels of intoxication. A chauvinist through-and-through. He never committed and slowly, as he grew older, he found his former conquests and on-and-off lovers snatched up by stable men willing to provide love and some semblance of security. He sees the majority of women as objects to be dominated; he enjoys the powerplay between himself and the opposite sex. However, and perhaps obviously, the women he finds most attractive are those who wield power: the kind of woman who can rebut his pithy remarks, who has a blazing intellect and a sharp mouth. Frighteningly shallow, it would be unlikely of him to ever accept any appearance other than stunning as worthy of his attention. He thinks very little of the sanctity of marriage and in past relationships has disregarded it completely.

Lifestyle

Occupation: Prisoner, Death Eater
Residence: Azkaban
Financial Status: The sizable Lestrange fortune is, for the time being, frozen in the vaults of Gringotts under Ministry orders. However, a considerable sum of money is concealed in the vaults beneath the family home.
Family

Parents: Constantin and Agneta Lestrange, both deceased.
Siblings: Rodolphus Lestrange, older brother, deceased; died during war.

Constantin and Agneta Lestrange, both purebloods, sought to have a large family. The pair were in their early twenties when Rodolphus was born, but it was another ten years until Rabastan was born, after all hope had been abandoned of ever having another child. The age gap between the two Lestrange brothers was a rift that prevented the pair from ever having a close relationship; it was Rodolphus’s reputation that Rabastan had to live up to.

Rabastan, though certainly an able wizard, always seemed to play second fiddle to his older brother. Whilst Rodolphus and Rabastan received almost identical marks when in school, Rodolphus's reports had come with glowing comments; Rabastan's were usually filled with pointed ones on his "lack of focus" and "propensity for doing very little". Similarly, when Rodolphus was at school he was surrounded by large groups of friends, a naturally social young man, whereas Rabastan had a small group of acquaintances who were nothing but trouble. Furthermore, Rodolphus was an able Quidditch player during his days at school, where Rabastan was nothing short of dismal when it came to flying.

These factors caused to the Lestrange boys' father to favour Rodolphus above Rabastan. When he did come into contact with Rabastan (who he mostly ignored), it was usually negative: Constantin had a fiery temper. Agneta was frequently absent, travelling and socialising and, when present, showered affection on Rodolphus, whose achievements at school were more commendable than Rabastan’s. Both Constantin and Agneta viewed their younger son, who had been sickly as a child, as a failure. As a result, Rabastan formed a cynical sense of humour and bickered often with his brother, even well into adulthood.

History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time

Sorted into Slytherin at Hogwarts, Rabastan did not get along very well with his fellow classmates. Being sickly, smaller than the other children and quiet in a house full of quick, socially-attuned children earned him a reputation for being a weakling, a weirdo or worse, more suited for Hufflepuff than anything else.

Despite the stigma attached to the almost mute, pale boy, there was one companion he made, although whether or not it was an acknowledgement of mutual awkwardness it is not certain. Severus Snape and Rabastan, in their formative years at the school, were virtually inseperable. In the winter of Rabastan’s third year, on a trip home, he was beaten soundly by his father, who had learned of his youngest son’s “consorting with Mudbloods” and threatened to disown him. Rabastan, living in the lap of luxury, weighed up the cost of losing his considerable inheritance versus losing a friend. When Rabastan returned to Hogwarts, Severus’s enthusiastic greeting was met with reluctant indifference. It was not until sixth year, after Severus had cemented his place in Slytherin House as a brilliant wizard worthy of respect, that Rabastan resumed the pair’s friendship, despite his father’s admonishment.

In his early years Rabastan expressed a determination and diligence that all but disappeared when he hit puberty. One summer he returned from the South Coast of France having grown several inches, gained an effortless use of charm (well, as much charm as fifteen-year-old girls need, that is) and discovered the opposite sex. Over the next few years he would discover carnal pleasures, sneaking out of school and the kind of fun teenage boys find in petty vandalism and practical jokes.

Consequently his teachers' views of him degenerated rather swiftly.

More often than not the brunt of such vandalism and jokes were James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew, of whom Rabastan did not think highly. It was a reflection of his quiet allegiance with Snape that Rabastan and his friends played (or framed) pranks on the group as revenge for the way that they treated Severus. Rabastan’s disdain for Potter’s group could easily have been dismissed as petty jealousy, and on one level it was. On another, deeper level, it was the very beginning of his pureblood fanaticism: he felt that everyone in Gryffindor – the blood traitor’s house – was a blood traitor themselves. It also constantly galled him that Potter and Black outperformed him on a fairly regular basis when he believed he was the superior wizard. Perhaps if he’d applied himself…

His tastes evolved quickly: sure enough, by age seventeen he had tired of setting off inconvenient hexes behind people's backs and turned his attention fully to the social aspect of school. He put his full attention into personal gain - money, sex, alcohol - and manipulated others for his own fun. His final marks were good, though without a doubt they would have been much better had he applied himself.

Teenage attitudes and a near-obsession with consumption prevented Rabastan from focussing his attentions onto a career path following school. Bright enough to do anything he put his mind to, but too lazy to put his mind to anything, he spent much of his post-school life traveling, drinking and brooding. Travel would see a pet hatred he had accumulated during his schooling life, the prevalence of tainted blood and the destruction of pure wizarding 'culture', blossom into full-blown irrational hatred. From his early indoctrination he had been taught that tainted blood was the cause of all troubles in the wizarding world - he had no reason to believe otherwise.

Upon return from his travels, he found a changed climate. Much of his social circle had settled down in serious relationships – his own brother having married in his absence. Former lovers were no longer available (though some were more available than others). A depressiveness set in and again, his prejudice against mixed-blood wizards grew. Rodolphus had joined Voldemort almost immediately after leaving Hogwarts; at the age of twenty-two, Rabastan finally followed in his brother’s footsteps.

Rabastan’s taste for cruelty and sadism made him useful in Voldemort’s plan. Having familial connections arguably progressed his passage in the hierarchy of Death Eaters, however, Rabastan applied himself to his task with such dedication that had not been seen since his early days in Hogwarts. He tortured, interrogated, maimed and killed many people, quiet and content in his task without actively seeking promotion through the ranks. His diligence was not to go unrewarded: Voldemort inducted him into the circle of trusted Death Eaters, once more following his brother. His loyalty to the Dark Lord would see him incarcerated, then freed into what would be the thick of the Second War.

Much to the Dark Lord’s delight, Rabastan’s first imprisonment had left him somewhat mentally unhinged, permanently shifting and blurring the man’s perception of right and wrong, essentially leaving him without a moral compass. It is because of his state that he is able to commit atrocities of torture.

During the Second War, Rabastan’s specialty was information gathering through torture. It was as if his ability to judge right from wrong had metamorphosed into an ability to judge how much pain was necessary to elicit the truth from a victim. Not only was he fond of using the Cruciatus curse, Rabastan enjoyed inflicting pain himself.

Fighting for the Dark Lord in the final battle, Rabastan needlessly used excessive force against those far less experienced than him. Because of this, upon Voldemort’s death, he was swiftly imprisoned once more, pending a trial. It is there he waits, now, for something or someone to help implement his idea of a revolution.
